This is a relatively brief but straightforward exposition of an obscure (to most of us) text, relating the themes of the book with the peoples, places, and languages from which it sprang. The author, Dr. Jesse Harasta, for the most part succeeds in keeping clear the potentially confusing interactions between humans and gods, not to mention an equally confusing set of character names (so many twins!). There is also a useful bibliography at the end.

The Popol Vuh is a very unusual book. I have read many books on Mesoamerican civilizations, This book is a first on the view point of the native Americans. It is short but very much to the point of creation beliefs of the early Mesoamericans. You have to think outside of the box, too see the correlation with other world wide religions. I believe once you get into Popol Vuh, you will enjoy it very much, or at lease get you thinking ...D

This book is interesting, but without the text of the pool vin, it is hard to get a real sense of the book. It would be good to get a translation to read as you study this book.
