I just received my book today. We made the Shrimp Burgers for supper. They are fantastic, great shrimp flavor and super easy to cook. Looking through this book, I see many recipes that are new and possibly were never published in other ATK books and magazines. I'm excited to try some new recipes and develop new family favorites. I can really appreciate that each recipe contents and detail instructions will make the ultimate dish every time. This may make my Christmas gift list for all my adult relatives who can and "can not" cook. I have tried quite a few of the recipes before, but to have them all together makes it even better.
The chicken "spiedie" recipe is worth the cost of the cookbook, it tastes that good. We have prepared dozens of recipes from this cookbook that we use monthly. My Wife asks for some of them weekly. It's a great edition to anyone's kitchen. As a Southerner, I had hoped that they would include a Louisville "Hot Brown", a "Chess Pie" or a "Nashville Hot Chicken" recipe but we'll have to wait till the next edition?
This has some really great recipes and they are all accurate to where they are from. Cook's Country did a lot of research on this one. For Utah, they have included Funeral Potatoes. Not really much favorite dish (it can be way too rich at times), but a few bites are good. My husband and I just ordered this one a whim. Didn't really need it, but it fun to look through all the regions and see what they have. We'll make a few, but probably not all. Shipping with Prime was super fast.
I love the Cook's Country books, and I love local food from all over the country. I couldn't resist this when it popped up as I bought another book. I haven't cooked any of the recipes, but it's fun reading with good dishes from various parts of the country.
First, the good news. As with all other Cooks Illustrated books, the recipes are well researched and clearly written. I am disappointed, however, because the local recipes are STRONGLY skewed to the East and South. The Midwest gets only a passing glance. And the West has been combined with Texas (which to a real Westerner seems more Southern), and a majority of the recipes in that chapter are Texan. There is a total of ONE Northwest recipe. Even California is grossly underrepresented. What about fish tacos, Cobb salad, and California style pizza? I realize Cooks Illustrated is an east coast publication but would have appreciated better representation of other areas.
I had decided to stop buying cookbooks, but the preview we're allowed here on amazon.com made me forget my resolve. This is a cookbook I will use. The recipes are not complicated, there are a lot of very good photos, and many regions of the country are represented. I think this is one you'd like to have in its paperback form rather than as an e-book.
They feature Barberton chicken and that's why I got it. Fun to read too.
Lots of recipes from all over the USA. Easy to make and fun to eat. I wish there would have been at least one recipe from each state but am still happy with this somewhat limited yet yummy collection.
