I, like most, had heard of the 70 page Pestana pdf floating around and used that for the first 5 weeks of my rotation. Had I known sooner about this expanded version I would have made the switch ages ago. It is a very easy read written in a similar tone Dr. Pestana's surgery review. He distills only high-yield facts and adds many clinical pearls. Surgical Recall is an excellent resource for on the wards and OR pimping but this text is invaluable because it cuts through the additional low-yield nonsense that Lawrence provides and gives you what you need for the test. Many times during the shelf I wanted to mentally caress Dr. Pestana's insane eyesbrows as the questions seemed as if they had been taken right out of the book. The surgical clerkship can be a hectic time with a seemingly endless time crunch but with this resource you should be more than ready to ace the shelf."

About the Author
Carlos Pestana, MD, PhD, is emeritus professor of surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. Ranked #1 in his medical school class, Dr. Pestana has a doctorate in surgery from the University of Minnesota and did a 5-year surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic. He has received over 40 teaching awards and prizes for teaching excellence. In the early 1990s he was a member of the Comprehensive Part II Committee of the National Board of Medical Examiners that designed what is now the clinical component of the USMLE Step 2 exam. Dr. Pestana is also the author of Fluids and Electrolytes in the Surgical Patient, which has been translated into Spanish, Italian, and Greek.

If you're in Medical School or PA School and have an upcoming Surgery Rotation, or if you're a Surgical Intern, please buy this book. This book has almost everything you'll ever need to stay on your toes when the Surgical Attending pimps you out in the OR or out on the floor with tough questions. You'll look forward to getting pimped because you'll know so many of the answers. This books is so good, and its imparted knowledge so useful, it's almost like cheating. So stop wondering how you'll survive your Surgery Rotation. Buy some coffee. And read this book. You won't regret it.
If you're in the surgery clerkship for med school, you should read this book IMMEDIATELY. Quick read and high yield. Made me look less stupid than I actually am.
Highly recommend this little book. This was the only guide I used to study for the surgery shelf exam - I read the entire book and did all the questions in the back - and I got a 91% in the nation on the test. I did not use any other study materials. Highly recommended!
I wish I could give this book a million stars. Yes, it is small. Yes, it is condensed. However, EVERY LINE IS IMPORTANT. Read this book 2-3 times, do the UWORLD questions and NBME's you are absolutely golden for the exam. Carry this around in your white coat and read when you get a break. My surgery rotation was so exhausting with 12-14 hour days so I didn't have much time to do multiple resources, but instead found that just using this and knowing it verbatim would be the best thing for me. BUY THIS BOOK NOW.
I used this book as well as surgical recall for my surgery rotation. I really enjoyed this book because it's not written in point form, and for me, it helps to read something in a complete sentence.It goes through the basics of various surgical disciplines.You may not be able to answer ALL the questions your attendings ask, but it will give you a good foundation to maintain a smart "medical" conversation with your attending
In the preface, Dr. Pestana makes a point about National Boards and says "their quality control is awesome." To prove his point, he refers you to a particular question and encourages you to check the answer in the key at the back of the book.Unfortunately my copy doesn't have an answer for that question in the key, or any other answers from questions 20-65 and 112-157. In fact, many of the pages are missing from the end of the book--not fallen out, simply blank. So not only do I not have all 180 vignettes, I'm also missing about 40% of the answers.Kaplan's website seems to be unaware of this deficiency (and many of the other problems listed on this book's negative reviews). It is unfortunate that their quality control doesn't live up to the author's standards. (This book is near the end of its life cycle, too; with a new edition coming out in October 2018, there's no reason they should be shipping copies with such obvious errors.) Anyway, if I had wanted to download a PDF with errata, I could have just scraped an older edition from a Google PDF search.Overall the information in this book is pretty superficial, but is an easy read to introduce the third-year student to surgery. If you want something to prepare for the boards, better to get NMS or de Virgilio.
This is all you need to do well on the shelf exam. I usually averaged around 79 or 80 on shelfs- nothing special. But surgery was my second highest score- I got an 86. All I did was read this book twice (it's short so you better be able to pretty much recite it) and did the 100-150 or so UWorld questions for surgery. And of course pay attention on rotation. But I didn't like start studying from the beginning of the rotation or anything like that. I'm just a middle of the road medical student. Excellent book
I used this on my Surgery Rotation as a third year medical student and it helped me get honors! The book is thin and small, so it fits well in your white coat pocket. It is pretty general and has a little bit of information from every surgical service. This is NOT your go-to to study for shelf exams/USMLE Step2 since this does not have enough information in it. HOWEVER, this does give you a general list of topics that should be known with general information on those topics. I read this on the first week of my rotation and right before the test, which I think helped. For my shelf exam, I used this, UWorld, and Firecracker questions and I did well - so I would recommend any 3rd year med student get this!
