I brought this along with Marjorie Liu's Monstress and I have to say I was not that thrilled with The Wicked + The Divine Vol. 1. I loved the bright and colorful art style (and will keep it for that alone), however the story itself left me wanting. If you're going to give the readers gods being reincarnated as Florence Welch and non-binary Bowie then please, please give me the chills and the shivers that I know a story like that can deliver. Most of the characters are flat and pale parodies of real life pop artists (seriously, Amaterasu is pretty much Florence if you watch the video for "Spectrum" and Lucifer is Bowie, Baal reminds me a lot of Kanye and the Morrigan's got some Siouxsie Sioux mixed with Emilie Autumn). Also the main character Lauren is not very interesting. She wants to be a god so she shoehorns her way into their world in more ways than one. I'm glad that this series exists because we need diversity like this in comics, I just wish that the story had more oomph. Don't let this deter you from reading it if you get the chance before buying it though. Like I said, the art style is wonderful and there are some parts that are pretty good.
The premise of this comic is really cool. I love mythology and all the sources it draws from and it's cool to see old stories and characters reimagined in modern times. Fables does this really well in the medium. W+D falters a bit. Despite being extraordinary, all powerful beings, it seems like every god is shackled to an archetypal teenager who's locked in the rebellious phase of their life. This makes for character exchanges where gods are just sort of calling each other c*nt nuggets and spouting profanity at each other in a contest to see who's more edgy. I'm all for bad language if it's used for something but here it's just sort of juvenile and tasteless. It also kills story progression when you have maybe 3 pages at a time of two characters dick fencing each other followed by something grisly happening and then we're just abruptly moved on to another scene. I didn't like this comic. The art was good and I loved the premise but the delivery on it all was poorly done.
This graphic novel was an interesting take on ancient gods & goddess and how they influence humans for a short period of time before dying & then are brought back almost a century later. The artwork was very colorful and the gods and goddess are unique. This graphic novel's artwork had the fashion from the 80's incorporated throughout the book even though it was set in 2014. Overall, I liked the story with the various point of views, however, some of it was confusing due to lack of background knowledge of certain characters which hopefully will be discovered as I continue reading this series. This is a graphic novel series for adults as it does contain profanity and adult content.
Every time I walked into our FLGS, the cover of The Wicked + The Divine caught my eye. I vaguely knew what it was about, I knew the art was incredible, but I always reasoned that I'm not into comics, so why bother. When I hear people reading comics, I always jump straight to DC or Marvel, and I just never had any interest in superheros. I knew this wasn't a superhero type of story, (though I guess you could make the argument that it is, since they are gods,) so eventually curiosity got the better of me and picked up Volume 1.I am so glad I did. It's amazing. The writing is incredible & the artwork is fantastic. Like any good book, it gripped me right from the start. I was really impressed at how much the story developed over 6 issues. I didn't feel like I was missing information, which I have experienced in the few comics I've read.So for someone that isn't into comics but kind of wants to be, this has been a great stepping stone. Though, I'm already feeling a bit of the frustration of knowing I only have one more volume + 1 issue until I've caught up and have to wait for more.
The Wicked + The Divine is just that... wickedly divine. It's an indulgent look at how we look at religion, music, society, youth, and death. It's simply a masterpiece. It's mystery layered into a mystery. We have all been Laura at some point, loving music artist to the point of obsession. (At least some of us have) She is the reader, and the one that moves the story along. Don't miss out on these stories, they are fun and intelligent in a way we rarely see in comics.
I really liked “The Wicked and The Divine, Vol. 1.†The artwork is so beautiful. The story line is pretty fun too. I was drawn into the story because of the artwork. I was fascinated by how beautiful the pictures are. The story is pretty interesting, that these gods get reincarnated every two years as teenagers. The are pretty much rock-stars and then they die. While they are reincarnated, they basically cause a ton of mischief. Now one of the gods is being framed for murder, so a mortal girl is trying to figure out what really happened. The biggest plus of these graphic novels is the artwork.
First of all, I loved the idea. Gods that incarnate in mortals every 90 year and live two flamboyant years and then they die and cycle continues. It's also very easy to love and/or be mesmerized with the gods and their personalities and to identify with Laura. I mean, everyone kinda have that celebrity that they love way too much, doesn't they? The writing is simple and will hook you, the art is awesome and VERY beautiful and once I started Reading I didn't stop until I finish it ( fast-paced and lots of questions in your head, quite a killer combination). It ends in a plot-twist...Side note: my favorite gods are DEFINITELY Lucifer and The Morrigan. You still here? What you're doing? Go read it !!!
I've read a lot fo glowing reviews, but I still had my doubts about The Wicked + The Divine. It didn't sound appealing to me, but boy, was I wrong. The illustrations are striking in an almost cinematic way, and the story is fast paced and witty. I'm glad I gave it a chance, despite how I felt about the synopsis; I would have really missed out otherwise.
