Delightful introduction to the people, language and culture of Slovakia. Easy to read, well organized and very informative. I recommend it to anyone going to the Slovak countries in east Europe! (Especially people like me, third generation American with ancestors from "Slovakland.") I bought it thinking it would be a good pre-trip resource and I started by opening it up to just the section I was curious about. As I read one passage, however, I became more curious about another topic and in the end I read it cover to cover! It's so well written, I kept it close as I traveled even though my backpack had limited space. This resource helped me to make the most of my short travel time. It helped me soak in the culture and pay attention to things that are unique to Slovakia, helping me find the real cultural exchange I was hoping to find. Now that I've been and returned to USA I can't wait to go back to Slovakia again! Thank you Mr Edwards!

I bought Brendan Edward's book out of curiosity . I've Brendan a student of Slovak history for many years now and will be traveling again this Spring/Summer to see my extended family there . I try to read as many book of this nature as I am on the process of writing my own book on Slovensko . Mr. Edwards does a great job of being informative , while providing much-needed insight into the people of Slovakia . Mr. Edwards provides a good look at all aspects of the culture and workings of this wonderful country that most people ( at least in the U.S. ) think is still part of " Czechoslovakia " . I highly recommend this book .

This resource is entertaining, informative and contains the right amount of detail to be quite helpful without becoming tedious or boring. It is exceptionally well written, illustrated, and is highlighted appropriately. (The only error that I found was in the rumored lineage of an American actor -- hardly noteworthy.) The guidebook is straightforward, does not "pull punches", is a frank assessment written in a professional, but very readable, style.

I bought this last fall before going to Slovakia to meet my father's family for the first time ever. It gave us good information about what is considered polite and impolite there and what to expect from our encounters. Every country has its own behavioral quirks and expectations and its good to be prepared.I found it very helpful, well organized and I recommend it highly.

Purchased as a gift with, as of yet, no other feedback on historical accuracy, etc.

Brought up in the traditions of my maternal grandparents homeland I enjoy all i can learn .

This is a very well written book about a little-known country. It covers all the relevant topics a traveler might want to know about, from history to folk customs, to recent politics. It's given me great insight into Slovakia.
