About the Author
Judy Finchler is an elementary school teacher and librarian from Parsippany, New Jersey. Kevin O'Malley has been amassing high praise and impressive awards for his hilarious, kid-friendly picture books, including numerous starred reviews and two School Library Journal Best Books of the Year. He is also the illustrator and coauthor of the best-selling Miss Malarkey series for Walker & Company. Kevin lives in Baltimore, Maryland, with his wife and two sons.

Testing time can be stressful for students and school staff every year. This is a wonderful book that pokes fun at it all. I love reading it to my kiddos (students) a couple weeks before testing and directly AFTER testing is done. We get to compare/contrast how we all reacted to testing as compared to the book. The kids love seeing the funny things that the teacher and school staff do during testing and why we start "acting" a little different. Great way to help make light of testing time and help kids (and teachers) realize testing time isn't really all that important and it is over quickly.
If you need a book to ease the tension of the stresses of standardized testing, "Testing Miss Malarkey" is the best choice out there. I bought this book to read to my third grade students as they entered the world of official standardized tests. They went gaga over it. They have asked me to read it to them multiple times. The book is written from the children's point of view as observe the stresses that the teacher experiences during this time of the year. It was such a hit, that teachers in upper grades have asked me to borrow it several times. Even the sixth graders enjoyed this book. It's a great story time book and I recommend it highly.
I borrowed this book every year from a colleague to read to my class around testing time. My students always enjoy this text and find it quite funny. I finally decided to buy my own copy so my class could read it independently after I use it as a read aloud. This book is how I start my testing discussions with my 3rd graders. It is a fun way to open up the dialogue and begin answering all of their questions about state mandated testing.
In this age of over-testing and over-dependence on high stakes testing to evaluate schools and students, Testing Miss Marlarkey provides a well needed diversion. Judy Finchler cuts right to the heart of high stakes testing to present a light-hearted and humorous, but sadly accurate picture of how these tests affect schools, administration, students and parents. Underneath the delightfully drawn pictures and tongue and cheek text, there lurks the serious effects of high-stakes testing and the author cleverly articulates how disruptive and damaging this kind of assessment can be to all parties involved. I would recommend that all upper elementary and middle school teachers use this as a read-aloud for their students to put high-stakes testing in its proper perspective. Thank you, Ms. Finchler, for a common sense reaction to all this malarkey!

Malarkey is exactly what some teachers and parents think of standardized testing. This book is a good way to introduce students to the fact that testing is a way of life in the U.S.A. these days. It is a good way to relieve the test anxiety some students might feel.
Funniest book ever and I'm not a teacher. But I raised 4 children who took lots of tests and this book gets it! It is a favorite of mine! And the illustrations are very fun. Highly recommended.
