This book, Weeds of the Midwestern United States and Canada is great and incredibly useful in many agricultural fields, including agronomy, farming, ranching, and horticulture. It includes over 350 weeds species. I am a 3rd year agronomy student and I have always needed a book like this and now I have found one. I have had and used this book for over a year. I have found it useful each and every time I have needed to identify an unknown weed species in a field, whether it’s a corn field, soybean field, alfalfa field, or a grass pasture. Even at work my mentor, took a look and instantly wanted a copy as well. We have now ordered 2 more for our office. This book has in-depth physical descriptions of weed species. It includes each of the growth stages of each weed, and what each stage looks like for all 350. They include at least 3 detailed colored pictures for each of the 350 weed species. These include the emergence stage, the growth stage, and what seeding out at in the maturity stage looks like. One of my mentor’s favorite features is that the book includes footnotes about related species including the family of the weed. It also discusses whether each plant is toxic or not. He also enjoys the history about how the plant may have come to the United States and Canada, how fast it may have spread around the countries, and discussions about which States or Provinces each weed currently grows in.Over all this a great book for agronomists, gardeners, horticulturists, and backyard enthusiasts who have a weed identification problem. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who fits the four categories above. It will be money well spent for everyone who needs a book like this one.
I purchased this book to aid me in my job as weed control officer. I had seen a copy, and noted that this volume contains some examples that are not found in "Weeds of the West" and I thought it would be a good supplement to available references. The photos are generally better (than in "Weeds of the West"), and more illustrative of weeds "in the wild", so this is a plus.Another feature I greatly appreciate is the listing of toxicity of each example described.A third asset is the inclusion of any known "colloquial" names for the weed in question. These vary greatly from one region to another, and what is commonly accepted nomenclature in North Dakota may be gibberish in Nebraska or Ohio. This "thesaurus" of common names helps alleviate those confusing differences. However, I find it rather disappointing that several weeds which are common in my region are missing from the pages. Specifically, Black Henbane (to name only one), which is notably toxic to humans (and probably livestock), is ignored. This weed is relatively common, but most of the general population is not familiar with its identification, nor with its potential for physical damage.Another negative impression is the "range of distribution" charts included. These are woefully inadequate, apparently due to the fact that the volume seems to have some data that is grossly outdated. Burdock is shown as having wide distribution, but absent in most of California, Arizona and New Mexico. My personal observations include seeing miles of it distributed along the highways of those states, and growing much taller than the description in the book. If the information is known to be in error, perhaps the resource data is questionable, or so it would seem.Perhaps the most troublesome aspect (for me) of this book is that it is arranged in a manner which gives the impression that it is quite likely intended as a reference book for a Botany Major. This shortcoming is very similar to "Weeds of the West" and the book is not as easy to use as it should be, for general information available to the public, who merely want to know (quickly) what a particular plant might be, and if they should have concerns about its growth in their area. If the name is unknown, one must page through much of the volume until a plant looks familiar. A thumb index (do publishers still do those?) or a coding/index by flower color, or leaf shape, might be of much assistance to the uninitiated (but curious) mind.Certainly, much of the overall content is also available on the internet, but even those sites that offer color-coded or "leaf-shape and distribution"-type search parameters are a bit clumsy for those of us who have not taken a biology course since high school or college. Also, on the job, taking the time to search through thousands of listings to find the plant in question would take too much time away from actual work.Overall, I am not sorry I bought the book. It is quite helpful to me on the job, but there are several stumbling blocks to what I consider "ease of use."
Weeds are a terrible problem. The solution that is most often recommended is a slash and burn policy. Pretty much kill all the greenery so that only the strong survive and that usually is the weed. I had a very tough year of spraying hundreds of gallons of recommended defoliant agents around my buildings and nothing worked steadily Hundreds of gallons wasted. and still weeds towering over the grass. A friend took a job where he needed to identify weeds and their characteristics and control them so I bought this book for him. It is very well written and describes and has pictures of weeds and it discusses the best way to kill them without poisoning the entire area Today I saw hundreds and hundreds of dead weeds and this time I think they will stay dead!
Outstanding book for any weed science class not the best for ID but good for information great photos and information
I love this book. I am interested in all the plants I see out there, there culinary and medicinal roles (past and present) as well as to identify what is toxic. This is the most comprehensive source I have, especially as someone new to the study
Although this book should not be used as a wild edible primary reference, it provides a great deal of high definition photos and descriptions for you to correctly identify almost all weeds in the midwest. My other wild edible books come up short in that they have a limited amount of species. With this book, I can correctly identify local weeds, and do further research online to determine if there is any edible or medicinal value to the plant.Best thing about this book is the high definition color photos. Don't waste your time with old school crayon colored or black/white sketches.
Book is a little difficult to look up weeds. You have to narrow it down by characteristics to pinpoint the weed. VERY good pictures though.
Great tool to identify weeds.
