I used this with my second child, both of whom have been every-two-hours night nursers until they were two. I only let them go that long because I am a lazy breastfeeder and it was easier to nurse than wake up and hear them throw a fit in the middle of the night. I read it every night for a week and practiced the phrase used in the book, with a substitution of "milkies." He seemed to get it as a newly 2-yr-old, but was not pleased. Two months later, he puts himself back to sleep (still in our bed) and wakes up at the buttcrack of dawn, as 5 or 6...but at least it's light out!!The only thing I would change is the flow of some of the wording...just a page or two feels a bit awkward. I love the illustrations...I have an art & design background and that part is highly important to me in childrens' books! I wouldn't recommend a book unless it was also visually appealing & I will sometimes reject library books if they don't have good illustrations. So the fact that I paid for this is something. ;-) I'm also a doula and I am adding it to my client lending library because it's so helpful! Top pick!
This book really helped me to night-wean my toddler without any fuss. I read it to her several times and talked to her about how she was getting bigger and mommy's nursies were getting tired from being awake at night. Then one night I reminded her that "mommy's nursies sleep at night" and that after her bedtime nursing she'd have to wait for morning. She whined a little when she woke in the middle of the night but I just reminded her that the nursies were sleeping and she went back to sleep. After 2 or 3 nights she no longer even whined about it, and after the 4th night she stopped asking. Now if I need to make an exception, for example when she was running a 103/104 fever and I wanted her to get all the milk and antibodies I could talk her into, I tell her "We'll wake the nursies up because you are sick" and when it's over and she asks again I just remind her that she's not sick anymore and nursies need to sleep. She loves the pictures in the book and even though she's been night-weaned for a good 6-9 months now I think she still likes me to read it to her. She especially likes the kitty.
My 14 month old was up nursing every 2 hoes. I was desperate for sleep, and ordered this despite my skepticism. I read it once and was even more skeptical. There's not much to it. But, we followed the instructions in the back, read it every night for a week or two, and then night weaned in 2 nights. The first night she cried for milk off and on and was angry and restless for about an hour. The second night, half an hour. And that was it. It's been over 2 months and she rarely asks to nurse at night, but when she does I tell her the milkies are sleeping and she settles right back down. It's amazing.
I have recommended this book to multiple of my mommy friends. It's just beautiful, both in story and illustrations. My three year old nursling son loves this story and requests for me to read it all the time. The first time I read it to him, I read the part in the beginning where the author says she's writing the book to her beautiful nurslings. Now my son says "Mommy, I'm your beautiful nursling." It's SO sweet. I highly recommend this book.
I bought this book to assist in night weaning my 14 month old son. We co-sleep and we are in the middle of sleep training using the Jay Gordon method (which I also recommend, though I can’t say how it compares to anything else).First of all, my son LOVES the book. When I read it he’s completely rapt, unlike most other books which he’ll grab out of my hands and turn the pages of. He brings it to me to read to him several times during the day and I also make a point of reading it at waking time and bed time. The beautiful illustrations radiate the love, trust, and intimacy present between mother and child, and I think that that’s a big part of what’s holding his attention. Yes, the text is very simple but that is the point. This is not a story book, it’s a book for teaching concepts and limits to toddlers.I’ve found it very useful to have a sleep training book that accurately represents our family’s sleep habits, and this book definitely has been an effective teaching tool.I do wish this book were available as a board book, but the softcover quality is fine. Other reviewers made me fear it would seem home-bound but it’s definitely a very standard quality softcover. Don’t let your kids rip the pages. Also, while sleep training is not complete yet we are definitely making progress!
I don’t write reviews too often. But holy cow. I know what it is about this book, but my 19 month old son is obsessed. He LOVES this book. We just started our long-term weaning journey: we still nurse to sleep and when he wakes, as well as when he wakes during the night which is once a night (or less). We wanted to start weaning him off of those night sessions, as well as the ones before sleep and naps, and felt that his would be a good place to start, based on the reviews. So far, we have just spent this week introducing the idea to him with this book. He loves this book, because it is so similar to our family (family of three and they sleep in the same bed). Not many books that we have include bedsharing, and he likes seeing it as we read. Dad and I switch off nights reading it to him before bed, and we replace the word “nursies†with “booboos.†The illustrations are well done, and even though it’s a normal page, softcover book, it is perfect to keep at our bedside. Highly recommend for anyone who plans on gently night weaning!
I agree with the others that this is a really nice book, but "Daddy" does figure prominently in it so if you don't bed share with your partner this will be confusing (it was for us cause we don't bed share with Daddy). My child liked "milkies in the morning" the best of all the books we tried.
