This author is an atheist who also suffers from mental illness. His message, across his work, is one that mocks Jesus and misrepresents God. He does this by cherry picking quotes from the Bible, taking them out of context and putting them together as he wishes. His Brick Bible and other works involve legos in very violent, disturbing and sexually explicit scenes. I am returning this book and am glad I did my research before purchasing any others by this author.
Big hit with my 6 year old nephew!
My son loves it! I love that even LEGOS can tell the story of Jesus!
I love this series of Bible books - because they are concise, simple, and accurately share the story for little ones. We have a one year old, and he likes the size of the pages, and the holes that show through to the next page. I've ordered several in the series.
ISBN 0794403794 - I've always wondered how the Christian story of Easter could possibly be translated into a children's book, so I picked this one up looking forward to finding out. I have to hope there's a better telling out there, somewhere.Modeled on Mark (chapters 11-16), the story of Easter is told, beginning with Jesus's arrival in Jerusalem to celebrate "a feast." As he and his friends shared their last Passover meal, Jesus announces that he would be turned in to the authorities by a friend, which happens later that night. Taken and sentenced to die on the cross, Jesus is made to carry his own cross to Calvary, where he dies. His friends bury him and mourn. The leaders who ordered his death leave guards at the tomb, expecting him to rise again in three days. When his friends return three days later, an angel tells them that Jesus has risen; he soon visits his friends and tells them, before he leaves for heaven, to spread the good news of God's love. There are so many strange things in this book that I hardly know where to begin. The religious arguments aren't particularly important - what you believe will determine whether or not you'd be interested in this book - so I'll focus on the story as re-told here by author Allia Zobel-Nolan.First, the book is very much like a Golden Book, so it's very short and missing a lot of details. That would make it sound like a good book for little children, but I think the 6-8 age group might be more correct because, despite what's missing, it's quite verbose. The book fails to identify Jesus as a Jew, just as "the king". This might be because Christian parents will have trouble explaining this anomaly to their children, but it strikes me as weird because, since he's not noted as "king of the Jews", the book cites Jesus's claims to be "the son of God" as the reason to crucify him - but has him celebrating Passover! Also, most likely because the book IS aimed at young kids, it literally skips Jesus's death. He carries the cross to Calvary and dies soon after, that's it! Last, Jesus's visit, after his death, to his friends is written as no big deal: "After Jesus rose from the dead, he visited his friends who were happy to see him.", with no other elaboration, as if the dead visited all the time. The illustrations, by Trace Moroney, are very bright and quite colorful. The only negative is that they sometimes make some of the text, which is on top on the images, difficult to read. At the back of the book are some activity-like pages: "Things to Know About Easter", a short list of Easter basics, and a set of simple questions, with answers, about the holiday. It's not terrible, it's just not great.- AnnaLovesBooks
As another reviewer stated, the author is an atheist, seeking to make a mockery of the Bible. I had the opportunity to meet him in person. Pray for him.
The pictures are colorful, with the majority of the pictures and text about the events of Holy Week. The last two pairs of pages are on the events of Easter morning and the following days. It has a nice question and answer section at the end. The paperback I bought is too wordy and a little dark for the preschool set. The content is suitable for all elementary grades, but the style of the illustrations will probably be unappealing to older children.
This small book is very appealing for youngsters from, say, age 4 to 12. The older kids can read it to the younger ones. There are about 25 words per page. It's a board book, which makes it sturdy. It will survive lots of young hands handling it. Good gift for a Sunday school class.
