This is the last of the fifteen "Find-Outer" mysteries, and unfortunately it ends with more of a whimper than a bang. At this point on her life Enid Blyton was beginning to suffer from ill-health, and it reflects in some of her work. But for better or worse, this is the last outing of Fatty, Bets, Pip, Larry and Daisy – not to mention their friend Ern – and so it provides something of a farewell to them all.It's the holidays and the five friends are back together again, though their parents have supplied them with an itinerary of places they could visit in order to keep them out of trouble. Quite liking the sound of Banshee Towers and the sea paintings that are on display there, the Five (plus Ern) chose to bike out and spend the day there. Accompanying them are Fatty's little Scottie dog Buster and Ern's less-obedient dog Bingo.Despite the unpleasant man at the turnstile and the strange tale of the wailing banshee, they have a pleasant time – and Ern is so intrigued by the sea paintings that he and Fatty agree to return there tomorrow. But it's on their second visit that Ern notices something strange about one of the artworks: a small red boat in one of the paintings is now missing.Clearly something is amiss, and the plot thickens when the dogs manage to find a secret passageway that leads from the hills behind the tower to its fireplace.It's a bit of a slapdash story all things considered, from the obvious villainy of the crooks to the idiotic omission of a red boat in one of the forgeries to the fact that the banshee legend doesn’t really come into the main story all that much. And in all honesty, I actually felt a bit sorry for Mr Goon this time around: the conclusion is rather needlessly cruel to him, especially as he didn't do anything all that bad this time around. We don't even get to see Fatty in disguise!But it's not a bad way to say goodbye to these characters: the setting is particularly atmospheric, and it captures that dreamy quality that all Blyton adventure stories have: that children have total freedom to explore the countryside without fear, and that the bad guys will always get their comeuppance.
